The Indian Register of Shipping (IRS) has entered into a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the IIT Guwahati Technology Innovation and Development Foundation (IITG TIDF) to collaborate in the field of underwater technologies.
The partnership will focus on training, design, and manufacturing, with both organizations jointly offering certification programs, workshops, and research initiatives. These initiatives are aimed at building skilled professionals and researchers with strong industry-oriented expertise in underwater design and manufacturing.
IITG TIDF, a Section 8 company founded in 2020, plays a central role in advancing technology development under the National Mission of Cyber-Physical Systems. Its Technology Innovation Hub (TIH) on Underwater Exploration is one of its flagship projects.
Speaking on the collaboration, Prof. T. G. Sitharam, Chairperson of IITG TIDF’s Board of Directors and Director of IIT Guwahati, emphasized the dual focus on technology and skill development, noting the value of working with IRS in these domains. Prof. G. Krishnamoorthy, Vice-Chairperson of the BoD and Dean at IIT Guwahati, highlighted that IRS is recognized globally for its leadership in safety, security, and environmental protection, and expressed confidence that this partnership will advance technologies for underwater exploration.
Dr. Asokendu Samanta, Vice President and Head of R&D at IRS, stated that the collaboration provides an opportunity to expand training and certification programs, equipping professionals with crucial expertise in a rapidly growing field. He added that IRS and IITG TIDF look forward to working together closely to achieve these goals.
