Airlines Pivot to Vaccine Logistics as India Prepares for Covid-19 Rollout

After months of turbulence caused by the pandemic, India’s airline sector is preparing for a new mission: enabling the nationwide rollout of Covid-19 vaccines. With passenger traffic still below pre-pandemic levels, airlines are now focusing on cargo operations, positioning themselves as vital partners in the country’s vaccination drive.

From Pharma Hubs to Every Corner of India

The logistics plan is already in advanced stages, with airlines creating dedicated teams and specialized divisions to handle vaccine transport. The focus is on moving temperature-sensitive doses from major pharmaceutical hubs such as Hyderabad and Pune to distribution centers across the country.

Industry experts say this operation could not only support India’s healthcare efforts but also open a new revenue stream for the aviation sector. “Cargo operations have already gained traction in the absence of passenger demand. Depending on the economics, vaccine transportation can provide airlines with an additional source of income,” said Kinjal Shah, Vice President at ICRA.

Airlines Gear Up with Cold-Chain Innovations

Some carriers are developing specialized logistics arms, while others are tying up with third-party partners to provide end-to-end cold chain solutions.

  • SpiceJet has launched Spice Pharma Pro through its cargo arm, SpiceXpress, offering controlled temperature services ranging from -40°C to +25°C for vaccines, medicines, and sensitive medical supplies.
  • AirAsia India has assembled a dedicated cargo team to assess requirements such as temperature-controlled containers. “AirAsia has expertise in handling perishables and is ready to support vaccine transport with quick turnaround times,” said Ankur Garg, Chief Commercial Officer.
  • Vistara has pledged full support to the government-led vaccination mission, while IndiGo has said it is evaluating vaccine shipments onboard its aircraft.

Nation-Building over Profits

Industry analysts caution that vaccine transport may not generate high margins initially. “It is expected to be viewed more as a social responsibility initiative, particularly under government contracts,” said Suman Chowdhury, Chief Analytical Officer at Acuite Ratings.

Others see a broader opportunity. Vasudevan S., Aviation Partner at KPMG in India, noted: “This is not just a business prospect; it is about nation-building. Success here can also strengthen India’s global reputation as a reliable logistics partner.”

Airports Join the Effort

Airports are also gearing up for the vaccine mission. Delhi’s Indira Gandhi International Airport and several others are expanding cold-chain infrastructure and setting up dedicated handling zones to process vaccine consignments quickly and safely.

With airlines and airports joining forces, the aviation industry is expected to play a central role in one of India’s most ambitious public health operations — a task that could also help the sector chart a new course toward recovery.
