The global space sector is on track to become a trillion-dollar industry, and start-ups will be at the heart of this transformation, according to Dr. S. Somanath, Director of the Vikram Sarabhai Space Centre (VSSC), ISRO.
Speaking during a panel discussion on “Global Opportunities for Start-ups in the Space Sector and Trends” at the India Pavilion, Expo 2020 Dubai, Dr. Somanath underlined that the next wave of growth in space will be driven by innovation from emerging players.
“For start-ups to succeed, they must either reinvent existing technologies to disrupt current systems, generate fresh ideas for the sector, or creatively apply existing products and projects to new uses,” he said.
Dr. Somanath also called on established companies and matured start-ups to mentor and guide the next generation of entrepreneurs, thereby creating a self-sustaining innovation ecosystem.
India’s Push for Space Sector Growth
India has been actively reshaping its policies to encourage private sector participation in space activities and is also seeking greater international collaboration. The government recently launched the Indian Space Association (ISpA), an industry body that acts as a bridge between government agencies and private players, with the goal of positioning India as a global space hub in the coming years.

The India Pavilion itself is a highlight, showcasing a kinetic façade of 600 colourful rotating blocks that form a mosaic representing India’s rich heritage and technological advancements. The design embodies the theme of “India on the Move”, reflecting the country’s evolving identity as both a cultural powerhouse and a modern innovation-driven economy.
